Filipinos are surprised to find out that other countries have this sungka game as well — and not just our neighbors in Indonesia and Malaysia.
In fact, Amazon lists this as an African game! Imagine that. The sungka game we all grew up with in the Philippines has been played for centuries in such faraway places!
Traditionally, we use cowrie shells instead of glass stones. The Indonesians use the black seeds of the chico, which you may know as the brown sapodilla fruit.
Kids love this game!
