Salakot is a traditional wide-brimmed hat from the Philippines, predating the Spanish colonial period. It is recorded that the wife of Rajah Humabon of Cebu was wearing a salakot when she greeted the Spaniards.

Like many other conical hats found throughout Asia, particularly in China and almost all Southeast Asian countries, the hat was designed to protect the head of the wearer from the heat of the sun as a shade especially for farmers working in the fields and also from rain.
