buco pandan (young coconut and screwpine)
halo-halo (mixed fruits)
macapuno (“mutant” coconut)
queso real (cheese)
ube keso (purple yam and cheese)
In the Philippines, the favored Selecta ice-cream flavors are Pistachio & Cashew, Butterscotch Salted Caramel, Oreo Strawberries & Cream, Black Forest, Coffee Crumble and Double Dutch.
Selecta does not sell these Philippine favorites in the United States.
Most Filipinos are lactose intolerant and as such get stomachaches from American ice cream with “real milk.” The ice cream that Pinoys grew up eating in the Philippines is technically called “mellorine” by United States standards — it has lesser dairy content and less likely to give lactose-intolerant peole the indigestion.
Mellorine is also labeled “Ice Confection” or “Frozen Dessert” in other Western countries like Canada and Australia.
